Akaki Tsereteli State University was established on the basis of Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University and is one of the oldest universities of Georgia. When Georgia was under the Soviet rule in the year 1930, Tbilisistate University was abolished by theauthorities and instead four independent institutions were created. State Pedagogical Institute was formed at that time. Again Tbilisi State University was re established in the year 1933 and State Pedagogical Institute moved to Kutaisi by that time. Almost 700 students of Tbilisi traveled to Kutaisi for studies.

The University was finally transformed into Akaki Tsereteli State University in the year 1990.The name of the University was given after the famous Georgian poet and national liberation movement Akaki Tsereteli. The University got merged on Feb 23rd with Kutaisi N Muskhelishvili Polytechnic Institute in the year 2006.

It is also one of the country’s oldest higher education institutions with a wide range of educational programs and research directions. Akaki Tsereteli State University is ranked as the 2nd best Medical University in Georgia. It is also ranked by the World Health Organization (W.H.O) among the first class schools.
